Rural Voice, the Social Change Assistance Trust 1984-2004, Working in South Africa, provides a glimpse into the lives of rural South Africans - the frequently invisible half of our nation. It is a history of 20 years of successful partnerships between foreign funders, South Africans and South African organisations committed to change. The Social Change Assistance Trust (SCAT) works with it's rural partners in remote places where communities have endured the worst excesses of apartheid and continue to live with its brutal legacy of poverty and injustice. This book is filled with the voices of people who have too often seen the promises of democracy fade, eclipsed by deepening poverty, the gendered ravages of HIV/Aids and the often excruciatingly slow provision of services. However, Rural Voice bears witness to the creativity, courage, resourcefulness and enterprise of the rural poor who face immense challenges head on with innovative solutions. With very few resources, many rural people are turning thier communities around, determined to claim their rights - economic and social - within a democratic South Africa.
